more Wes…

Quick! Go grab a copy of the Hotel Chevalier over on iTunes. It’s a 13-minute short prologue to the Darjeeling Limited.

(hey Wes, I love Futura too)

behind the times…

(whoa, hold onto your seats… mucho links ahead!)

There’s nothing to make you feel old like finding out, in a very circuitous way, about an internet phenomenom (doo-doo de doo doo) almost a year after it started. Such is the case with me and LOLcats.

People taking pictures of cats and writing cryptic messages in god-awful fonts? Who knew?! Where have I been? Apparently not hanging out with the right crazy cat people.

But there is a bright spot to this story: how I found out about LOLcats was through the Laugh-Out-Loud Cats, a one-panel cartoon drawn by Adam Koford (or Ape Lad as he is known). I first came to know his work through the 700 Hoboes Project — I drew one hobo (poorly), he drew about 5,000. And they are amazing.

So I was tooling around on Flickr one night and started flipping through contacts and, lo and behold, here were these cats. It was a little hard to get into the dialog at first (being LOLcats-deprived as I was) but I was soon hooked. They’re sweet and yet sometimes bitingly funny. Best part is, you can order your own panel. You can even suggest subject matter for it. I have one on the way, so be on the lookout for a Muppet-related one soon!

the human flipbook…

is not the same as the Human Trampoline. But it is an amazing commercial shot on the cheap. It’s crazy how far a good idea will get you in lieu of a big budget…

the Human Flipbook (and the shooting of the commercial)

(but really… “Erbert’s and Gerbert’s?! sheesh!)

deep disappointment…

Usually I’m a huge fan of Oxo. They take the most mundane things (mainly kitchen utensils) and study and redesign until they come up with something far superior than the original. Do you know anyone, for instance, who doesn’t have one of their vegetable peelers?

So, in my search for a replacement wire cheese slicer, I thought they would be a good place to start. Oh sure the Oxo slicer looks good. But it comes with a replaceable wire. Which originally seemed new! and exciting! but then I decided that it was just a bit of a cop-out. Essentially they’re telling me “go ahead and buy this thing, but really, who are we kidding? we all know you’ll use it twice and then SPROING! We’re even admitting it’s going to break, but to make things a little better, we’re going to let you try and fix it once that happens.”

Ummmmm, thanks.

Ahoy Mateys!

Today is Sept. 19 and that means it’s Talk Like A Pirate Day! So, go ahead, yell “ARRRGHH!” and call people “wenches” all day. If you need a refresher course, take a look at the English-to-Pirate translator.

And, in honor of all of the fake pirates today, still slaving away in their cubicles, set yer eyes on this treasure I have found ye… a crystal pirate computer mouse. What scalliwag in his right mind wouldn’t want one of these…

if I had another baby…

I'd dress them in these pants every single day, all winter long.

Three of my favorite things: pirates, monsters and sock monkeys. I’d suggest you find someone who knits though, because they’re on backorder, with very few being made each month. Or perhaps you’re one of those trendy starlets who already knows how to knit? Whatever. Make me some damned monster pants then, ok? In *my* size!

* * *

(note: my friend, N., who hipped me to these pants in the first place says there are more pants, many more cranky pants… so go take a look. My friend N. also knits. Does my friend N. know how to take a hint? We shall see, friends, we shall see.)

At the risk of sounding old and cranky…

We can put a man on the moon, but apparently it’s impossible to manufacture a wire cheese slicer that lasts more than six months.

Ok, so usually I adhere to the Alton Brown school of kitchen gadgets which goes something like, “don’t own any kitchen tools that have only a single use.” I have two exceptions. One, is an Octodog (more about him at a later date). Two is a wire cheese slicer. Yes, I know that KNIVES will slice cheese, and yes, we have those, but my poor knife skills just don’t do the trick. So I buy those flaky wire things that break every few months. Is there some sort of super cheese slicer out there that I don’t know about? I mean, apart from the gigantic, powered things they have in the deli? Someone enlighten me… puh-leeeeeze.
